Most of the time it is frustrating when you are unable to get the best out of your internet connection. Be it a home broadband or mobile broadband, most of them nowadays won’t reach the promised speed. Some people feel cheated especially when they’re paying fixed monthly fees and they can only use their internet connection in a satisfying state only for a few days in a month maybe due to weak signals or some techical problems. There might be some technical limitations which we can’t do much but only to bark at the service provider asking them to make it better.

But what if the telcos and internet service providers are able to provide stable and good broadband services and you want to access to some websites but they are not available for your country? Yes, again you feel frustrating because although you have a good and fast internet connection, you can’t access those websites. So, what should you do? Bark at the telcos again? Let me introduce you to something that you might concur with me that it will solve one or two of those problems, read on.

I’ve been introduced to BolehVPN and have been given a chance to try it hands on. What is that? you asked. BolehVPN is a Virtual Private Network service provider. I’m not good at explaining it technically but if you interested to know from that aspects, go to this LINK. Basically the picture below can explain how it works.

I’ve been testing in on mobile broadband (I use Celcom and DiGi) because I think some users nowadays rely on that more instead of home broadband, especially if you’re always on-the-go like me.

The benefits I get from using this BolehVPN were as follows:

1. Download speed increased especially if you’re into P2P downloading like torrents (ooppss!). I’ve downloaded a file of 349MB in less than an hour (about 40 minutes) which usually took few days. In these sense I felt very much liberated because downloading a large file using normal ways with a normal connection (without VPN) always a pain in the a**. Most of the time it was so agonizing.

Downloading speed increased when using BolehVPN. Do note that speed might vary depending on broadband plan and speed.

2. Able to access websites that are not available for the country and those websites that are limited by the ISP (internet service provider). Well, this my friend, is one big advantage of BolehVPN. Take for example you want to listen your favourite songs online, you found a good online radio station but its acessibility is not available for our country. So, what do you? Yeah of course we have youtube but what if your youtube also loads in a slow rate? Of course, with BolehVPN you can kill two birds with one stone, literally, whatever that means to you. So, yeah, you can access that favorite radio station of yours and then load your youtube vidoes faster.

3. Secure online activities, which will protect your details such as location and IP. Need I say more?

4. Specific settings and configurations for specific purposes. Every server used in BolehVPN can be selected to optimize your surfing purpose. For example, you want to do streaming of movies and videos, you can choose specific server for that. You have to try and explore it yourself if you wan to understand more about different configurations for different purposes.

5. And of course flexible and cheap packages. If you’re not a heavy user, you can opt for a short term subscription for as low as RM30 a month. If your subscriptions expired, your account will remain there untill you renew or buy a package again. So, you can choose which package is suitable for your needs. You can even try BolehVPN first for as low as RM5 for 3 days before you decide to go for longer packages.

So, what do you think? Sounds good? What I’ve stated above is just a tip of an iceberg. You’ll discover more if you try it yourself. The case of that OKU local got me thinking “Whoa, we’re divided by the side we’re supporting? The Government is not for all people?” Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against the Government nor that I’m supporting any sides but I feel that it is inappropriate to cut-off any subsidies or welfare allowances just because a person is supporting the other side, what more to say for an OKU (disabled person). If you lost a supporters to others then do whatever possible to win him back but not in the way of “threatening” him or make him miserable or suffer. This will be a point for the Oppositions to bring more bullets to the battlefield, why give them the issues when you can settle it in good manners? I know some take it as war when it comes to things like this but this ain’t a war.

Ok, let me tell you one short story which seems to be related to this matter indirectly. Few years ago I went to one of the longhouses in the upper river areas or ulu ai is what Ibans called it. The Tuai Rumah (heads of the longhouse) was one very talkative person when it comes to politics. He might not be an educated person but he knew what happens outside. After a lengthy conversation he eventually admitted that he is an opposition’s supporter, hence all the bad words he spew about the Government during the conversation. He said there’s even a “directive” for him to step down as Tuai Rumah and that “directive” even spelled out a name to replace him. But he refused. A year passed by and apparently the YB (State Council Member) of his areas have been changed. The new YB, a local man of the area, have been good in his approach of getting himself closer to the people and he’s from the ruling party. He have his own way to “please” the people and eventually made a lot of the locals keen on him.

Then, one day I met the Tuai Rumah again (although we’ve met a lot after my first encounter with him but I always avoid talking about politics with him, it’s not my cup of coffee if you need a reason), this time I cannot avoid the politic conversation as they were already in it. As the youngest blood in that “forum” I didn’t say a lot, just listening and giggling when they got their facts wrong and try to correct them but you know, they seems to “know” better. And then I realized something, I look at the Tuai Rumah as he keeps on talking and I listen to every words he said. Well, what do you know, he praises the Government!  I can’t help myself but to laugh a little there. 

As a person who have high tendency to ask something inappropriate when my curiousity is triggered, I spontaneously asked him in a joking tune “Apu, udah ngundi perintah nuan pia apai?” which literally means “So now you’re rooting for government?”. I’m not worry to ask him that kind of question because those in that “forum” know well that he was once a supporter of the other side. So he laugh and said “Auk jang, manah YB baru tu, enda aku peduli iya ari parti ni asal ya manah enggau rakyat” which means “Yes son, the new YB is a good fella, I don’t care which party is he from as long as he is kind to the people”. At that very moment, I smile (not because he’s now supporting the Government) but solely because I discovered something like that for the first time. I’m amazed at how easy it is for kindness to change people’s mind (in this case, rural folks). I don’t want to ask any further like ”Why?” - which I normally do - because I don’t want to be in an awkward situation when he might ask me back of who am I rooting for, knowning myself more of a “neutral” in that sense. So, you got my drift? Read again if you don’t and don’t get me wrong, I’m not praising anybody here. By the way this is a true story except that I might have cut it very short though.

My story above is just to give an example of from what I encounter, which proved my standing that you don’t have to be cruel to win back any follower/supporter that you have lost to others. Why be cruel when you have kindness and other good ways of “pleasing” them back? You have the “power” don’t you? Don’t just do it because you’re mad at them, do it because you feel there’s something wrong in what you did which make them run away from you and for goodness sake fix it right. I’m not trying to be a smart-ass trying to tell you what to do but I just want to point out what I feel right.

About the “jangan lawan towkay” part, personally I don’t feel like that’s a rule of life, maybe ages ago, yes but maybe now, no or maybe yes in some cases which maybe not politics. Because, if that rule applied, we’re not democracy, more like monarchy? Seems like it. What I wanted to ask are: “Who voted politicians into politics and become government?” Politicians themselves? and who actually need to serve the people? people themselves? Give it a thought….

Anyway, just my two cents…

It made me realized sometimes it’s good to go back to the basics. Like most, if not all, things in life, along the way when we look forward to them there were and will always be times that we reflect back of what we’ve done in the most simple ways possible, which, we all do missed so much. No kidding, as we grow older everything seems to get more complicated and more weights put onto our shoulders which also make our thinking and perspectives grow wider and larger. The contributions of those natural orders to our lives make everything we do seems bigger and more important until we can’t afford to put much ignorances to any mistakes that we commit.

Anyhow, there will always be a child inside all of us, some younger spirits that will always confined somewhere inside our souls that will never grows old. Too much to render in our life makes it clouded among our current self in which when things gets really forcefull, we will seek a path to go back to it, literally. Just that, the saddest thing is we can’t never have it back no matter how.

Nevertheless, no matter how far we go there will always a little us inside that will bring us back to where we used to laugh, used to be ignorances to most things, used to cry and so on. Memories might fades but it will never be deleted. There will always a thing or two that will remind us to revisit them somedays

Personally it’s quiet difficult to categorize this Galaxy Note. It’s too big to be a phone (as some people said a phone should not be bigger than 5 inches) and It’s a little bit small to be a tablet, so, it comes in between. In a rather funny way to say it, this is what you get when a Galaxy S 2 have sex with Galaxy Tab, it’s their baby!

In size, the screen alone is measure at 5.3 inches diagonally, the whole body is about 6 inches also diagonally. One word, HUGE! It’s probably the biggest phone (if it is to be categorized as phone) for now. One thing I know is that, it comes with every goodness of a tablet and portability of a phone.

What I want to point out here is what have impressed me about this Galaxy Note. Here are a bit of my sharing from my experiences with it.

1. Hand gesture/motions – Galaxy Note allows you to use your hands to do some “magicall touch” for some fuctions. Some of them are as follow:

• Put your palm on the screen while listening to music or watching video to mute/pause the audio/video temporarily. Lift your hand away and it will unmute/continue play
• Put your palm vertically and slide from right to left (or vice versa) to capture screen (this is awesome!)
• Touch any icon and swing the handset to move an element to the stand-by screen or app list
• Tap and turn your hand to rotate a picture/photo
• Shake, it automatically looks for near-by bluetooth devices

2. Battery life – I get more than 10 hours on a single charge with uses like tweeting, facebooking, listening to music for 2 hours, playing games like Shadowgun, internet surfing, playing with photo editting, texting, calling, opening some apps, downloading and many more (with the 3G on for the whole day)

3. S – Pen – This probably one of the most interesting part of this Note. Conventionally, this kind of stick known as stylus to many PDA and smart phones, which was only used for writting and touching. But the S-Pen have been created smart enough to do a few more things to add to the conventional ways of using the stylus for touch screen devices, with its button on the S-Pen of course.

• Press the pen button, tap and hold it on the screen to capture the screen.
• Press the pen button, drag the pen from right to left on the screen and it become the “back button” function
• Press the pen button and drag the pen from bottom to top to open menus
• Press the pen button and tap twice on the screen to quick-open the S Memo

4. The S-Apps – If you’re looking for something to organize your schedule this Note pre-installed with apps to compliment the S-Pen.

• S-Planner
• S-Memo
• S-Choice to download other apps available in the Market that are recommended to be used with Note

5. Fast & Smooth – With it’s 1.4 Ghz dual-core processor, anything you do in this Note is effortlessly fast and smooth. Running on latest Android 2.3.5 add a better performances to this Note.

6. Sizes – Big gorgeous HD Super AMOLED screen enable an ease of view of anything from web, photos and videos. The whole size of this Note is still pocket-friendly although it is HUGE! The best thing to balance out something big in size is the slim body and Note comes with that characteristic. Having a reasonable big size phone have always been my dream and I bet I’m not alone :)

7. Cameras – Some people (maybe most people) looking at how good the camera in the phones that they plan to buy. I think this have been one the most common feature that people ask about at the time they get their hands on any phones with camera before they buy them. I agree, camera on the phone is one of the important “tools” to look out for nowadays especially those who share their photos a lot on-the-go. Note’s camera comes at 8 MP with LED Flash for Main (Rear) camera and 2 MP front camera. Some of my friends who use Samsung Galaxy S II have said that Samsung phones have the best camera and I will never doubt that

8. Storage – like some other smartphones nowadays, this Note comes with 16 or 32 Gb built in storage and I think most people are glad that this Note also comes with microSD card expansion slot. Want to get 32 Gb storage space in your 16 Gb Note? put in a 16 Gb microSD

9. Design – Personally for me design of a phones or tablet is the first thing that will caught my intention. Sleek design with a slim form factor, almost seamless front surface between the screen and the bezel, textured back cover and simple shape defines how a beauty this Note is.

10. Creativity – With this Galaxy Note your creativity will be boundless! You can create a masterpiece with this monster and S-Pen helps a lot in that sense. Edit your photos, create a drawing or even create anything of your own liking with third party apps like Zen Brush.

So, what do you think? Impressive right? My explaination and points above might not all the things about this Galaxy Note, so if any of you want to know more about this awesome phone-tablet hybrid, do get your hands on it, it’s awesome I can bet you and some people will be so jealous if you do have one :p

Oh ya, that’s how I categorized this Note, indeed it is a phone-tablet hybrid, more of a hybrid between Samsung Galaxy S II and Samsung Galaxy tabs that is Kudos to Samsung for being brave enough to come out with this kind of device and I can’t wait for the ICS update of this device, for sure it will be more awesome!

Anyway, it will be a little bit unfair if I only state what I’ve found impressive about this Note, so, like other things in life this Note also have some of what I rather call “opportunity costs” of creating something different.

1. Because of its huge size exceeding typical phone size, this Galaxy Note is a bit difficult for one-hand operations, so for efficiency use both hands.

2. There is no space if you want to hold it in “pinching” grip so it must be hold in your palm.

3. The volume button seems to be parallel to the on/off button on the other side (typical in most Samsung phones) so when you want to press the volume button, there’s a chance that you accidentally pressing the on/off button (also maybe caused by its size)

4. Since it’s a bit difficult for one-hand operation, taking photo with one hand also difficult, plus there’s no dedicated button for camera shutter (but I guess we don’t need that nowadays don’t we?)

I think that’s the only flaws I found in Galaxy Note (if there’s anything I missed, do share). Like I said I rather call those flaws as “opportunity cost” in building a device of this size which are not big issues. All in all, this Note can only be described with one word, AWESOME!! I’m glad Samsung dare enough to come out with the device of this size, I’m a very happy boy if I have one

Oh yeah!!! It’s finally happened! After about a month of planning, we’ve organized the FIRST EVER OFFICIAL TWEET-UP IN KUCHING!!! Don’t agree with me? I don’t give a damn! hahahaha! Anyway, on the last 10th December, this tweet-up or #TwtUpKch 2011 took place at the North Court tHe Spring mall Kuching. Like what have been promised, there were a lot of fun activities done. Sarawak bloggers as the organizers with the great help from some awesome tweeps as voluntarily committee/crews  (you know who you are) have made it real, like the awesome way of real, without you guys, this #TwtUpKch will not be that successful. Anybody wants to deny that now, was probably not there or they think it will be so AWESOME that they refuse not to come

Whatever it is, the crowds that day was unexpectedly overwhelming. As the organizer, we thought we gave a lot of great surprises for that event but the tweeps who came gave us greater surprise! Yes, they did, we were expecting only like 100 attendees but you tweeps, you just awesomely awesome!! More than 400 of you came to have fun with us that day and I personally want to extend my gratitude and thanks sooooooooo much for the supports!!! Without you guys it will not be that awesome!

Anyway, yes, Zee Avi’s homecoming concert that day was awesome (I will repeat that again and again if I have to) :p and it was also inspirational to see a fellow Sarawakian who’ve been around the world promoting her musics. Furthermore, she got the first ever song in Sarawakian Malay dialect in an international album, the Sikboh Kitak Nangis and like Zee said “not bad right?” Oh yeah, it’s not bad, it’s awesome!!! With most of the songs she performed that night are from her new album, Ghostbird, she amazed all of those who attended that show. Personally for me, nothing better than listening to and watching my favourite singers/bands live and she’s kinda sounds better live than in CD ;) During that show, she sang everybody’s favourite songs too, such as Kantoi, Bitterheart and of course the Mi Kolok Sigek.

Narmi was performing for the opening that night. Before she ends her concert that night, she expressed how she missed her home and how she really happy not only because she’s back at her own home but to perform live for us all. She even said a few inspirational advices and one of them was “siney sinek kitak orang pegi, sikboh lupak kitak orang Sarawak”, which literally means, wherever you go don’t forget where you’re from.

During that concert I bought her CD (which I already have one hihihik) with the hope that I can get it sign by her but no luck for that actually XD but… the best thing was, I met her the next day at the airport before she went back to KL. That was the second time I met her in person, at the same place this year, previously was in March when she was back for the Perhimpunan Belia thingy. Although I didn’t get to have a proper chat with her because she was rushing to catch her flight but it was awesome to meet her in person again. Honestly that’s better than anything else

Yes you heard it right!!! hitz.fm Kuching turns one year this year and they will throw a BIGGGGGGG party for that soon! And they call it hitz Kuching Birthday Invasion. There will be a lot of awesome performances during that party, the acts are such as Mizz Nina, Liang and Pop Shuvit. The hit song “Tear Us Apart” singer, Nadhira will be there as well. Apart from that, Borneo English Top 10 favourites, Polar and Evenstar, will be performing for the opening. And then to conclude the night, Jakeman & Skeletor of Club hitz will be spinning for the awesome finale. Isn’t all that awesome?? How can it not, right? Wait, there’s more, the party will be hosted by hitz.fm Kuching announcers none other than Meng and Natasha and….. wait for it….. of course the awesome hitz.fm Morning Crew JJ and Ean!!!!
